Big Daddy Love
Defying Traditional Labels
Description
Proudly hailing from the vibrant and storied music scene of North Carolina, Big
Daddy Love (BDL) is a quartet that has crafted their distinctive “Appalachian Rock”
sound for over 15 years. Born from the region's rich cultural tapestry, Big Daddy
Love’s music blends elements of rock, bluegrass, and Americana, creating a live
experience that's as diverse as the landscapes that surround and inspire them.
What sets Big Daddy Love apart is their genuine commitment to musical innovation.
Their Appalachian Rock sound blends Southern rock with a banjo and is a testament
to their ability to seamlessly merge traditional roots with contemporary influences,
resulting in a timeless and refreshingly unique sound. The band's chemistry is
palpable, with each member drawing from their own musical history to create
dynamic performances.
Having played around 1,500 shows at venues and festivals across the nation, BDL
has become synonymous with electrifying live shows that captivate audiences and
leave a lasting impression. Their journey is not just about making music: it's a
celebration of the soul-stirring melodies that echo the spirit of the Appalachian
Mountains. With a decade and a half of musical exploration, Big Daddy Love
continues to evolve, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of American roots
music.
The band consists of Matteo “Joey” Recchio on guitar and vocals, Brian Swenk on
five-string banjo, Ashley Sutton on bass guitar, and Scotty Lewis on drums. Brian
and Joey grew up together in the small mountain town of Sparta, NC. They reunited
in the summer of 2009 along along with Winston-Salem-native Ashley Sutton and
the band’s founding member Daniel Justin Smith, also from Sparta, N.C.
Scotty Lewis moved to NC from Richmond, VA, a few years later to become the
permanent drummer.
BDL has released three studio albums (To The Mountain - 2010, Let it Grow - 2012,
This Time Around - 2014, and one live album/DVD, Live at Ziggys - 2013). They’re
currently working on their next studio album and plan to release it in the summer of
2024.
